BONJOUR!

Bonjour from the French Alps. Ca va? I hope so. I’m having a lovely time. The weather is completely amazing. Clear blue skies with hot sun. The chalet is gorgeous. I’m missing the kids, but not unduly. My 7 year old told me he wasn’t missing me but was traumatised because his father had made him get out of the car and walk home at some point on Sunday and he didn’t know where he was! What am I supposed to do about that sort of behaviour? Crap. But I can’t be terribly judgemental when I’m not even there, can I?

We make an unusual group. There are four of us. Me. My friend. Her male friend and his internet date. They’re both lovely, but even though I understand they are at the beginning of a fledgling relationship, I can’t see much chemistry there. They just seem to be good friends. We’re having a laugh – going out for dinner and talking rubbish. Last night she told us that she wrote sex stories for a male magazines and has a sex thesaurus to give her alternative words for rude bits.

My skiing is improving, but it won’t be long before I take off in my ski trousers. Unfortunately I’m one of those sad people who struggle to do a poo in the company of strangers. Which means that with the combination of high altitude, too much food and wine and irregular movements I’m farting really badly. Will have to try and get a ski lift to myself tomorrow. I really hope my brother doesn’t read this because I’m wearing his ski trousers.

I’m knackered and I haven’t packed. I’ve got to organise all three kids for the week and get my own bags packed. I’m teaching at 8.30am tomorrow morning and then have to leave for the airport shortly after that. It’s all going to be a bit tight. I took the kids [...]

GOING AWAY

I’m panicking slightly, in that way that only a mother who is going away for a week and leaving her children in the care of other people knows. The lists I have written, the favours I have asked, the instructions and calender printouts I have distributed. And yet still I am fretting. [...]

BRITISH SOCIAL ATTITUDES SURVEY

The findings in this year’s annual survey of British Social Attitudes makes me feel much better. Public opinion has become far more liberal over the years and today less than 20% of people think that there is much difference between being married or living together. Most people now think that divorce is a [...]

LOSING CONTROL…

Kids driving me mad. House a mess. Economy a disaster. Heath Ledger dead. I was going to marry him.
Last night I lost it (only slightly) with the kids and shouted a lot about the fact that everywhere in the house was a mess and that they didn’t help me do anything. [...]

My seven year old was telling me a story tonight. I wasn’t completely listening. He said “can you look me straight in the nostrils and listen to what I’m saying”.

PARENT TEACHER CONSULTATIONS

Last night I had to go and speak to my teenage son’s teachers at his school. He has started his first year of GCSE’s so it was just to be kept informed of how he was doing.
All a bit embarrassing really – there was no problem at all with him – generally he could [...]
