The kids are coping remarkably well with jet lag. I simply do what my father does and tell them that jet lag is all in the mind and to just get on with it. I think both my children virtually fell asleep during “literacy”, but that is quite normal behaviour I suspect.
My 8 year old has bounced back to school with great gusto. He told me this morning that when he entered the classroom yesterday morning they all shouted his name out and were really pleased to see him. “They’ve never done that before” he said with a beaming smile. Perhaps slowly, post his best friend leaving he is getting his confidence back which is great.
I took him back to Cub Scouts last night for his second meeting in the hope that he would go off the whole idea….but no chance. He absolutely loved it. The group had organised a fund-raising night involving apple bobbing, hoop throwing and other such antiquated games all housed in an old style church hall. I felt as if I had been beamed back in time by about 50 years. Not surprisingly my (food obsessed) son won the prize for guessing the number of sweets in a jar. He had guessed 65. There were 66. Obviously there is now no way in a million years I’m going to stop him going back. He’s hooked. I must try harder to be a proper mother of a cub scout.
We had a bit of a hectic morning as he attempted to complete all his half term homework in 10 minutes (my fault) and then attempted to find PE kit and trumpet (failed) and then attempted to get me to think about a costume for him for his class assembly next week. “I’m going to be a kiwi” he told me. “Hmm. What do they look like?” I said. “It might be easier if you go as an Aussie – we’ve got a cork hat” I suggested. . . He looked at me blankly. “Mum. I need a green T shirt and shorts – I’m going at a Kiwi FRUIT not a kiwi person”. Oh. Silly me. A KIWI FRUIT? Anybody got a spare kiwi fruit costume I can borrow?

My first born has survived his week without me. In fact, I think he’s had a great time. He stayed with his dad which would have been good for both of them and didn’t trash my house in my absence. I’m glad I didn’t give him the job of looking after [...]

This is a very good idea.
The ‘ICE’ (In Case of Emergency) Campaign is a method that the emergency services can use to know who to contact.
All you need to do is store the number of the person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name ‘ICE’ (In Case [...]

I have some hot off the press news….apparently the person selected to take over from Rowan Atkinson after his six month stint, is Omid Djalili, a British stand-up comedian and actor. He’ll be great at the role, he’s very funny.

I am going away and my son has offered to look after the cats and spend time in the house. Do I trust him? Yes, but should you realistically trust any 16 year old boy and/or all their friends? Teenagers are simply designed not to be trusted. It’s in their [...]

We, the taxpayers now own 70% of the Royal Bank of Scotland. SURELY we should collectively be able to stop RBS (and Barclays and Lloyds) from imminently paying out millions of annual bonuses to their staff?
This is a reward for grievous failure. We would not put up with this level of f*ck up [...]

Several of my friends (both “real” and “cyber”) have suggested that joining the Cub Scouts might be a good idea for my slightly lost 8 year old, who has been pining for his best friend.
I have been looking into it and indeed, the principles sound perfect for what we were looking for:-
“The emphasis of Cub [...]
