QUIET WEEKEND

31. May 2009

I have had an absurdly quiet weekend. Which is probably a good thing, but I’m STILL even after all this time completely rubbish on my own. Missing Builder Bloke and my kids (who are with their dad this weekend) and therefore feeling sorry for myself.

Thank goodness for friends. Went to a girlfriend’s house last night to watch the final of “Britain’s Got Talent” and laugh about life. One of the girls there has been separated for even longer than me. She talked about how her Top 10 priority list for her ideal man has gone from:-

1. Hair
2. Shoes
3. Sense of humour
4. Money
5. Own car
6. Tall
7. Good looking
8. Kind
9. Good with children and animals
10. Likes to travel and eat out

To:

1. No toupes or long bits covering bald patches
2. No cuban heels or cowboy boots
3. Must have own teeth
4. No money? It’s fine, I’ll pay
5. Must not weigh over 18 stone
6. Must not be under 5’2′ (unless very rich)
7. No major personal hygiene issues
8. No major skin problems or life threatening illnesses
9. Not a paedophile
10.Not still living with his mother

It’s not good.

I got a text from my teenage son halfway through the day:

“We r thinking about buying dad some chickens for his birthday and a poached egg maker”.

Tempting though it is to go along with their ridiculous idea, I don’t think it would be fair on the chickens. My daughter’s retort when I said that it would get eaten by a fox and that he wasn’t at home much was “well, we’re thinking of buying him one for every year of his birthday so it would be fine because he’d have 48 left”.

My teenage son went to a party a few nights ago. The guy hosting the party lives with his Grandparents. Apparently his mother is in prison. When his parents split up, his dad moved almost immediately in with another woman. His mother was so incensed that she hired a contract killer to murder them both and got caught.

I have “Follower” envy. I proudly acquired a new “follower” today, but when I popped over to say thank you and look at his blog I was hugely jealous to find that he has over 500 followers!!! I on the otherhand have been teetering on the about to reach 50 mark for some time and getting all excited about it. Then, horror of horrors, today I’m back down to 48. I’m sorry to whoever has decided to “un-follow” me. But now I’m miserable about that too.

AND can you believe that California have banned gay marriage? CALIFORNIA? I thought they were pretty progressive.

“If a family has one old person in it, it possesses a jewel”.Chinese proverb My brave old Grandmother is in hospital AGAIN after taking yet another nasty fall. She is 96 now and has managed to outlive virtually everyone she knows, including her youngest child. I feel so sorry for her. It must be hideous [...]

I have just read “Dreams From My Father” by Barack Obama. His memoir was first published in 1995 and then again in 2004. It is an autobiographical narrative of his life up to the point that he goes to Harvard Law School. We learn of his early life in Hawaii, born to a white mother [...]

DIVERSITY WINS "BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT" 2009

They deserved to win. Their performance was electric and contemporary and I think sums up the best of British talent. An incredibly talented group of street dancers made up of 11 people – 3 sets of brothers and 4 friends aged between 12 and 25. A diverse group of colours, ages and sizes who have [...]

“EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE”

29. May 2009

My daughter decided to conduct an experiment last night during our meal together. She has a theory that her older brother is completely lacking in “emotional intelligence”. This we agreed was quite commonly a female trait, but her younger brother has it in bucket loads. Teenage son is immensely clever, but the sort of clever [...]

I came across this blog the other day. It’s called “Siren Voices” and it is written by Spence Kennedy, an Emergency Medical Technician with an ambulance service in the UK. He writes beautifully, in a raw and powerful way, with great insight and depth about the harsh realities of life. Small sound bites of hope [...]

"MUM’S THE WORD IN CYBERSPACE"

There is a double page spread in “The Times” today entitled “Mum’s the word in cyberspace” all about the increasing popularity of “mummy blogs”. This has taken me a little by surprise. Alice Castle who writes a blog called Dulwich Divorcee was one of the bloggers who went to Disneyworld with me and they have [...]
