The findings in this year’s annual survey of British Social Attitudes makes me feel much better. Public opinion has become far more liberal over the years and today less than 20% of people think that there is much difference between being married or living together. Most people now think that divorce is a normal part of life with two thirds saying that it can be “a positive step towards a new life”. 78% believe that the end of a marriage in itself does not harm the children, although conflict between the parents does.
The one remaining taboo that hasn’t changed public opinion over the last 20 years is our views on extramarital affairs. An overwhelming majority of 84% said that extramarital sex was ALWAYS WRONG (although they probably didn’t feel the need to shout it like I do).
