CLOTHES SHOPPING IN CHINA

BLOG, TRAVEL

An old friend from school sent me some photos taken of different signs in China. I remember when I went to China in the 80′s how funny some of the sentences in English were (not that I could do a better translating into Mandarin mind you).

I was thinking that I might be in need of popping over to this shop to make myself feel better:-

Rather than this one, which is currently where I have been shopping:-

Just seen a whole load of Chinese/English visual gags but your first is definitely the best!
A good one: “You will be prosecuted if you die here.” Hmmm. My Spanish/English translations at Uni were bad but not THAT bad.

The Chinese are often victims of piss-taking English speakers who are pretending to help just for a laugh. I’ve been there lots of times for work (in my former life) and seen waitresses with name badges translated into things like “c**t” or “bitch”. It’s horrid really. But they get their own back too – one of our suppliers gave us all honourary Chinese names, and we later discovered that my colleague’s name translated to “lazy worker”!
