POLANA RESTAURANT, KALK BAY HARBOUR

BLOG, TRAVEL

My depressed mood lifted as we set out this morning into glorious winter sunshine and drove to the Peninsula. We stopped to watch a whale en-route spashing about just near Camps Bay. We drove to Cape Point and I climbed up to the lighthouse and simply stood and admired the vastness of the view and it felt as if I was on the top of the world. I was expecting to see a dotted line at the exact point where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet – but it was ill-defined.

We saw ostrich, watched baboons cavorting in the middle of the road, saw where the Jackass penguins reside, admired gorgeous beaches and beautiful scenery – the weather couldn’t have been more perfect and then….to top it all we found (thanks to one of my top bloggy friends), the perfect venue to sit back and relax and enjoy the view. Should you ever happen to be in Kalk Bay you must go to the “Polana” restaurant in Kalk Bay Harbour – almost like a souk in style with very cool people lolling about in an attractive manner by the huge floor to ceiing windows, overlooking the bay. One bottle of wine, lots of seafood and people watching later and all my worries about my children and who they were with had evaporated with the surf.

I listened instead to my father’s stories of when he used to come to Kalk’s Bay as a child with his mother and two brothers, after his father had died and I thought to myself how lucky I was to be having such quality time with my father – something he never had the privilege of benefiting from given his father died when he was 10.

Several times so far when we have got talking to somebody else it seems that people do not immediately assume we are father and daughter. The couple last night at the Mount Nelson Hotel were amazed – annoyingly because he didn’t look old enough to be my father…although I suppose one can’t look too young to be a daughter…at one point he came back and said “people are going to start asking me for advice soon – not only am I sitting with someone young and beautiful, but she’s just paid for my lunch – what are they going to make of that?”. Well, yes. I think we’re managing to raise a few eyebrows.

We’re off to Lusaka tomorrow. I’m hoping to bump into Mud at CT airport in the morning as we cross paths.

Will try and update from there.

HI Lulu, have just had a great catching-up session. Your trip sounds amazing, and all of you being so close is pretty amazing too! The Baccini cake looks really good – I might give it a try. Hope you continue to enjoy the holiday. M xx

Quietly envious ( in a very good natured way) of your adult time with your father.
    Have a great time there.

Oh yey! I was SO hoping you were here yesterday for that gorgeous day, and thought about you while I sat with some old varsity friends (one here visiting from London) having Sunday lunch on their balcony in Kalk Bay overlooking the harbour and The Polana! Strange little world we live in all occuppying the same spaces… Hope your Zambian adventure is just wonderful x

Sorry to have missed you! After 17-odd hours travelling I was slightly blury at the airport and probably not the best of company! Sitting in the Mount N right now looking out at glorious Cape sunshine and hoping the rest of your trip goes just as well!!

That sounds divine. I would love to spend quality time like that with each of my parents – but much as though I love them, I know it will never happen. Well, who knows?

(They are coming over for this weekend though and my dad asked if I wanted anything. Jam doughnuts! "No, Zoe, something serious." We settled on Cheddar cheese;) )

Lucky you and enjoy the rest of your holiday xxx
