PROSTHETIC EXHIBIT

BLOG, HEALTH, KIDS

My brother was asked to exhibit some of his work this weekend at the International Make-up Artist Trade Show (IMAT). He works in prosthetics for TV and film.

He borrowed my son to make the face cast he needed of a young adult male. He wanted to create a face that had been badly beaten up. I nearly passed out when I turned up at his house to see the work-in-progress. My son had to spend about 20 minutes with his head completely covered in plaster with only a tube to breathe through. It would have made me feel horrendously claustrophobic:-

Well. You know all that small stuff I worry about with my kids? Let me tell you when you see the following picture you will understand why I had an “all is forgiven” moment. No one should ever ever have to see their child in this state in real life.

I’m going to show you the finished product because I think my brother is very clever – he made the whole thing from silicon and then added a wig and fake blood and eyelashes BUT DO NOT BE ALARMED – IT IS NOT REAL!!!

It still is bloody horrible though.

I mean really, really horrible.

I’m warning you.

It is not good.

If you can’t stand the sight of blood don’t even think about looking at it.

I mean it……

You see? I told you. That will teach you to look at the pictures without reading the text first.

My son obviously thinks it’s really cool and my brother has said he can have the finished product now. Great. So it’s going to be his door stop or pencil holder or something equally gross in his bedroom. Yuk.

Imagine if he had left the head on the tube by accident on the way to the show? Somebody would have had a heart attack.

It would also add to the fascinating collection of lost property, which includes things like wooden legs – how can you leave your leg on the train? – and wheelchairs, apparently.

I love it! Super cool! Much better than the fake bruises & black eyes I made as a kid, with my brand new makeup set. Will he do me a gangrenous hand?
