"RUNNING FREE" ALI CAMPBELL AT THE ALBERT HALL

BLOG, REVIEWS

I am having a very busy week – on the basis that next week I will be completely bored and doing absolutely nothing but bonding with my children in the middle of nowhere with my parents. I went to see Ali Campbell at The Albert Hall tonight (the lead singer of UB40). I LOVE the Albert Hall. It is one of my most favourite places in London.

I used to love UB40 too, but the concert was only OK, not great. He did a few old favourites, but the sound wasn’t brilliant and during “Kingston Town” the feedback was really bad. The band didn’t seem to particularly gel and although the audience were completely up for danceathon, I don’t think he got them really going. Our tickets had a face value of £75.00 each. We got them free from my lovely 80 year old friend, who “owns” the seats. If I’d payed full price I would have been pissed off. He played for one hour and twenty minutes and only did one (virtually unknown) song for the encore. He had a number of guest appearances, but Kim Wilde singing “I Got You Babe?” – not sure….bit too 80′s. Should have taken a leaf out of the Stones book and got Christina Aguilera to sing a song.

I need to write to him. He needs somebody to sort out his neck and back and core stability, otherwise he’s going to be in trouble. It’s a shame, because I could really help, but if I write him a letter he’ll just assume I am a stalky nutter.

It’s outrageous the price of tickets nowadays. And Ali Campbell, let’s be honest as good as his voice can be, isn’t The Rolling Stones or Paul Rodgers (the greatest rock-blues singer in the universe; did I mention he was my favouritist singer ever?).

I saw Led Zeppelin at the Albert Hall many moons ago when I were a young lad. Now that was a great concert….

Led Zep at the Albert Hall – can you imagine the price of tickets for that concert now? Thousands. Who’s Paul Rodgers?
