SHOPPING WITH TEENAGE DAUGHTER

BLOG, KIDS

RIGHT. That’s it. I am NEVER going shopping with my teenage daughter again.

Of course I am hugely proud and smug that she has now become the rainbow and I the faded old cloud, BUT honestly, if you want to be invisible, go out with her. EVERYBODY looks at her. Even the dogs and cats.

She needed some stuff. We tried lots on. I should know better than to ever try things on whilst she is in the same country – Her new favourite place to shop is “All Saint’s” – very cool. All floaty, layery, asymetrical, mostly grey with skulls lovely lovely stuff and everything she put on looked straight off the catwalk – on me more straight out of the mental institution. All tight in the wrong places and back to front looking and my fingers kept getting stuck in holes and I was going to complain until I realised everything was meant to be like that. Or far too small and when I tried to do the zip up at the back there wasn’t one and it was a fashion feature to just expose your whole body…. Just rubbish.

THEN she needed foundation so she managed to trick me into a department store and over to the Dior counter because apparently it’s the only foundation that she’s not allergic to (how stupid am I??). Before I know it she gets made up by a lovely male who drools over her skin. Tells her she should be a model. Tells her she has nothing to cover up. I stomp off for 10 minutes. Come back and because I am in such a sulk he gives me some free samples. HOORAY! Until he tells me that he’s given me the most powerful face cream on the market for EXCESSIVE wrinkles and to use sparingly. I nearly kicked him.

So now she wears Dior and I am still wearing Rimmel…..or maybe Laura Mercier at a push.

Good grief.

I must try harder to be more grown up.

Although just remembered – she took me to the Wolseley for brunch for my belated Mother’s Day present SO I COMPLETELY LOVE HER really. Such a treat.

We had a great day actually.

I know what you mean though. We went shopping last week for jeans – god, how stupid was I? Fortunately I didn’t want any and didn’t try any on otherwise I would really have been suicidal.

My daughter and I buy in separate shops.

    Keeps the family peace.

I do shop with her, but I don’t try clothes on at the same time.

    I like my fantasy world.

There was a feature on Woman’s Hour last week about whether you can ever be the wrong shape or too old for jeans … yes to the former but no to the latter.
It’s dire comparing your skin with that of someone 20 – 30 years younger, isn’t it? I have always been lucky and had good skin – not many spots as a teenager etc. But it still doesn’t stop it getting older. I’m still a mug for buying anything that offers eternal youth, though so I might have to investigate the latest Dior dollop.
I love the Wolsley for tea. A quick bit of culture in the RA and then over the road for tea. Smashing.
Nice that she still wants to go shopping with you, eh?

Awww… you’re a great mum! I have to say I feel a bit like that when I go shopping – all these super skinny teenies who look great in anything in the changing room looking at me like I’m some kind of alien and then when I try on anything it always looks wrong! I’m not particularly old but I definitely have a good 10yrs on them and definitely do not suit the skinny leg anything look!

Btw your RSS feed is down again.

I posted about being invisible a little while ago too. I have to put someone in between us in photos as the difference in skintone between myself and my very beautiful 18 year old daughter is just too much to bear!
