Harry S. Truman

Just continuing briefly with the father theme…I mentioned in my previous post that I often thought about what my father might do in a similar situation before making my decision. So I thought it would be interesting to get some comments on “what was the best bit of advice your father ever gave you?”

Mine was “THINK before you speak” and “Don’t ever write a letter to someone when you’re angry”.

Whereas the advice my brother remembers most was given as he went off to university”

“Never get a girl pregnant and never put your head in the oven” – as he says in the comments, it completely ruined Freshers week for him.

We looked at his x-ray and you could see a definite crack at the top of his humerus, which is causing him a lot of pain. Not quite enough pain, mind you to warrant taking the very strong pain-killers that you can’t mix with alcohol, because he wanted to have a beer tonight.

We were amused to see that his notes described him as being “inebriated and merry”. My brother told me that it had been a great shame that he had fallen over because up until then he had been the “life and soul” of the party. “You mean, life arsehole” said my dad.

My father is in London for the boat show. It has become an annual pilgrimage and my mother has given up coming with him because over the years she has learnt that she really hates him after he has been to the boat show. He always organises various pissed-farty lunches with other blokes who like looking at boats too. When he gets back from the lunch he can hardly stand up and then he wants us all to go to the pub with him in the evening. We have all learnt to avoid him, but generally one of us is nominated to go out with him, not to talk to him obviously, but to attempt to keep him out of trouble. This year it was the turn of my younger brother and he clearly failed in his task. My father literally fell out of the pub at the end of the night and has broken his arm. Brother and father in casualty until 3am this morning.

He is not feeling terribly proud of himself today.
