I wonder, in hindsight how the noughties will be remembered and defined. What will make it stand out as the decade that it was? Who will emerge as our new Beatles, the new Kennedy and what will be the overriding ethos of the generation? I wonder if it will become defined as the beginning of the end of civilisation as we know it. With the launch of the Western "war on terror" and a global economic meltdown, will we continue to fight wars we can't win, stamping our ever decreasing little feet whilst the East takes on a far greater role - with China especially growing at a much faster rate than the more developed Western countries thus changing the global balance of economic power forever. Will some of the weaker European Union countries collapse owing to bad debt with their governments defaulting? Or will diplomacy emerge as the saviour of the decade with Obama stepping in at the twilight of the decade to save the day?

Well that was a pretty contentious decision – awarding Obama with the Nobel Peace Prize. Presumably this was based more on future promise than achievement so far.
