I wonder, in hindsight how the noughties will be remembered and defined. What will make it stand out as the decade that it was? Who will emerge as our new Beatles, the new Kennedy and what will be the overriding ethos of the generation?

I wonder if it will become defined as the beginning of the end of civilisation as we know it. With the launch of the Western "war on terror" and a global economic meltdown, will we continue to fight wars we can't win, stamping our ever decreasing little feet whilst the East takes on a far greater role - with China especially growing at a much faster rate than the more developed Western countries thus changing the global balance of economic power forever. Will some of the weaker European Union countries collapse owing to bad debt with their governments defaulting?

Or will diplomacy emerge as the saviour of the decade with Obama stepping in at the twilight of the decade to save the day?

I wonder, in hindsight how the noughties will be remembered and defined. What will make it stand out as the decade that it was? Who will emerge as our new Beatles, the new Kennedy and what will be the overriding ethos of the generation – the New Year’s Revolution?

I wonder if it will become defined as the beginning of the end of civilisation as we know it. With the launch of the Western “war on terror” and a global economic meltdown, will we continue to fight wars we can’t win, stamping our ever decreasing little feet whilst the East takes on a far greater role – with China especially growing at a much faster rate than the more developed Western countries thus changing the global balance of economic power forever. Will some of the weaker European Union countries collapse owing to bad debt with their governments defaulting?

Or will diplomacy emerge as the saviour of the decade with Obama stepping in at the twilight of the decade to save the day?

Will the fashion definition of the decade be black leggings and denim?

For me it has been a fairly big decade I suppose – comparatively speaking. I started the decade with a husband, a four year old and a six year old and finished it on my own with a 9 year old, a fourteen year old and a seventeen year old. I retrained for a new career about halfway through, moved house three times and got divorced towards the end.

So “three children and a divorce” would have to be my definition. What’s yours?

I can remember the start of the Millenium with unbelievable clarity. I have been saying to friends endlessly of late “I can’t believe it’s been a decade since the Millenium New Year – everything is so clear in my mind it seems like yesterday – not only can I remember where we were and who was there, but I can recall what everybody was wearing – even what we talked about”. This has been bothering me hugely because it appeared to mean that time was just racing away from me and will continue to speed up the older I get. BUT I’ve just worked it out. I was pregnant!! No wonder I can remember everything – I wasn’t drinking. No blur.

I can’t for the life of me remember where I was or what was said for the next six New Year’s Eve’s – they just merge in to one big messy blur. Which is probably for the best.

Well that was a pretty contentious decision – awarding Obama with the Nobel Peace Prize. Presumably this was based more on future promise than achievement so far.

I’m really not sure what I think about it, but it seems premature to me and will certainly add a little more unwelcome criticism than he needs at the moment. He has indeed “captured the world’s attention and given it’s people a hope for a better future” but is that enough? He has already done much in the way of human rights – banning torture and closing Guantanamo, but surely you can’t give a world leader the peace prize after less than a year in office?

What happens if he agrees to increase the number of soldiers America has in Afghanistan? What happens if he doesn’t achieve his vision of a nuclear free world? What happens if his plans for climate change are rebuffed?

He still has much to do and much to prove.

My choice would have been somebody who works far more behind the scenes like maybe Dolly Parton.
