I couldn’t be at The Killers et al concert because I was doing a soul thing with Seal.
Therefore I asked my lovely friend to write a review because she loved it so much:-
Last night we had a fabulous time at “Hard Rock Calling” in Hyde Park. We didn’t get there until about 6.30 as we didn’t know any of the other support acts, such as “The Chew Lips”, “Passion Pit” and “Howling Bells” so forgive me if they are your favourite bands and you wanted to hear more about them. Anyway having had a wonderfully long leisurely lunch in Mayfair followed by a few glasses of rose in Guy Ritchie’s Punchbowl pub we ambled across Park Lane to Hyde Park where thousands of people were waiting in eager anticipation to hear the Kooks followed by the Killers.
The Kooks came on led by their frontman Luke Pritchard who sang lots of familiar songs but unfortunately he seemed even more pissed than we were as he staggered around the stage….it was all fine but luckily everyone was so excited about seeing the Killers it didn’t really matter.
So when the utterly gorgeous and talented Brandon Flowers came on stage and started to sing “Human” in that beautifully unique voice of his, the whole crowd just erupted and that was only just the beginning. Despite being an outside gig with thousands upon thousands of fans hanging onto his every breath – his voice carried effortlessly across the park whilst the band played brilliantly together, making each track sound even better than if you had the CD on in the car.
They played tracks from their latest album “Day & Age” including “The world we live in” and the fantastic “Spaceman”. They also played classics like “Mr Brightside”, “Smile like you Mean it” and “All these things I have done” each tune whipping the crowd up into a state of even more feverish excitement. I literally didn’t stop jumping up and down for an hour and a half and that’s really saying something at my age! Finally they finished their encore with the fantastic “Bones”, “Jenny was a friend of mine” and the superb “When you were young” and left the crowd desperately cheering for more…
I have to say that I honestly have not enjoyed an outdoor gig as much – something to do with the combination of a brilliantly talented rock band at the top of their game singing a 90 minute set without a single duff track, mixed with a beautiful summer’s evening in my home town with some great friends. What more could you want??
